Over two and a half centuries, Virginia has seen 74 governors, each one of them male. On Tuesday, Abigail Spanberger overcame this historic barrier by securing the position as the first female governor in Virginia's records.
The former US representative and CIA case officer succeeded with a election strategy that highlighted cost-of-living issues and strategically opposed the former president's agenda rather than the president himself.
Hailing from in the Garden State on a summer day in 1979, she relocated to a Richmond area at her early teens. Her father was an army veteran who subsequently pursued a career in law enforcement; her mom was a healthcare professional and volunteer.
She enrolled in the Virginia's flagship university, earning a diploma in literary arts. After graduating, she worked briefly as a educator before embarking on a career in public service.
“I grew up knowing that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and I did,” Spanberger shared with followers at a event in the city of Norfolk over the weekend.
At the US Postal Inspection Service, she worked cases involving narcotics, exploiters and financial criminals. She executed search and arrest warrants, frequently being the only woman on the operation squad. She then joined the Central Intelligence Agency and concentrated on counter-terrorism cases, working covertly and abroad.
In 2014, she and her spouse, an technical professional, considered their future. Residing on the west coast, they were considering another overseas assignment. They pulled out a world map and inquired of their oldest child, then in kindergarten, where they should go. the commonwealth, she answered, because “family and friends reside in Virginia”.
Spanberger recalled at her rally: “And so we decided to pivot from a path of service to country, to state involvement because she was right. Those dear to us are in Virginia.”
Back in Virginia, she joined Moms Demand Action, which combats firearm incidents, and founded a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she decided to campaign for the House, which advisers told her was a “impossible task” because the party hadn't had secured the seventh district in decades.
“But I witnessed what Donald Trump was implementing with his executive power and how he was pitting neighbour against neighbour. And I saw my member of Congress over and over again vote to repeal the healthcare law. And I realized I had to do something. So spoiler: I won.”
In the capital, she quickly became part of the Blue Dog Coalition, a alliance of moderate and budget-conscious Democrats. She prioritized less visible matters: expanding broadband to rural areas, fighting drug trafficking and support for former troops.
She earned a reputation for partnering with opposing parties and was consistently rated as the most bipartisan representative of the state's congressmembers. She was vocal about messaging that she felt turned off independents, cautioning her fellow Democrats against partisan language that could be weaponised in contested districts.
Along with Representatives a former CIA analyst and Mikie Sherrill, she was labeled a part of the “pragmatic group” in contrast to the progressive “squad” of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
In that autumn, she announced she would step down for a fourth term and would rather seek the state's top office in 2025.
Her campaign centred on ideas of public service, support for schools and infrastructure and defense of democratic institutions. Her CIA background gave her authority on defense issues and she spoke of government work as a calling instead of a job.
This enabled her to overcome rival candidate her challenger's attacks on cultural issues, including the assertion that Spanberger is an extremist on civil rights and health care for transgender people.
The governor-elect, who consistently argued that communities should decide whether trans youth can participate in school athletics, cast her opponent as the contender more out of step with the center of the Virginia electorate.
