The former president’s family business increased its hiring of foreign workers on short-term work permits this period, while his government was placing obstacles for other businesses attempting to do the same, an analysis released Thursday stated.
Based on data from the federal labor department, the Trump Organization aimed to bring in at least nearly 200 foreign workers in 2025 for temporary positions at the US president’s Mar-a-Lago resort, two golf clubs and his Virginia winery.
The quantity of applications for H-2A and H-2B visas for staff including waitstaff, clerks, housekeepers, kitchen staff and farm workers was the highest ever submitted by the organization, and up from over 120 in 2021, when his presidency ended.
It was also the fifth instance in a decade that Trump had attempted to hire more than 100 overseas workers for seasonal jobs at Mar-a-Lago, based on labor statistics.
The disclosure coincides with a crackdown on immigration laws by his government that has included the implementation of a substantial charge on skilled worker visas; increased review of the actions of the 55 million people who possess US visas; and tighter regulations for international scholars and reporters.
Overall, the business aimed to hire 566 foreign laborers over the period Trump has been in the White House, from his first term and during the upcoming year.
Notably, Trump was criticized by some in the GOP this period for comments justifying the need for overseas employees when a business was unable to find people with “particular skills” to fill certain positions.
“You can’t just say a country is coming in, going to spend billions to build a plant, and going to recruit individuals off an unemployment line who haven’t worked in five years, and they’re going to start making their defense systems. It doesn’t work that effectively,” he told a interviewer after it was implied that overseas employees lower the pay of American employees.
The White House declined a request for response, and the business did not immediately respond to an request for information.
