While perhaps not at the identical stature as pardoning holiday birds, but the county's top official experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the onset of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future away from worry.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, donated by a local firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six-seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the holiday season,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: happy, multicultural, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Every time, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
