Texas Attorney General Takes Legal Action Against Tylenol Manufacturers Regarding Autism Spectrum Allegations

Texas Attorney General Paxton is suing the producers of acetaminophen, alleging the corporations concealed potential risks that the medication posed to pediatric cognitive development.

This legal action arrives a month after President Donald Trump promoted an unverified association between taking Tylenol - referred to as paracetamol - during pregnancy and autism spectrum disorder in young ones.

The attorney general is taking legal action against J&J, which previously sold the drug, the exclusive pain medication suggested for expectant mothers, and the current manufacturer, which currently produces it.

In a declaration, he claimed they "betrayed America by profiting off of pain and promoting medication without regard for the dangers."

The manufacturer asserts there is no credible evidence tying acetaminophen to autism spectrum disorder.

"These companies misled for generations, knowingly endangering countless individuals to line their pockets," the attorney general, a Republican, stated.

The manufacturer said in a statement that it was "very worried by the spread of false claims on the reliability of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the welfare of American women and children."

On its website, Kenvue also mentioned it had "consistently assessed the applicable studies and there is insufficient valid information that demonstrates a established connection between taking paracetamol and autism."

Organizations representing medical professionals and healthcare providers concur.

The leading OB-GYN organization has declared acetaminophen - the key substance in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for women during pregnancy to manage discomfort and fever, which can pose serious health risks if ignored.

"In over twenty years of investigation on the utilization of paracetamol in pregnancy, zero credible investigations has successfully concluded that the use of acetaminophen in any stage of gestation causes neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring," the organization commented.

The court filing references recent announcements from the former administration in arguing the medication is potentially dangerous.

Recently, the former president raised alarms from medical authorities when he instructed expectant mothers to "struggle intensely" not to take Tylenol when ill.

The FDA then issued a notice that physicians should think about restricting the consumption of Tylenol, while also declaring that "a proven link" between the drug and autism in minors has not been proven.

The Health Department head RFK Jr, who manages the Food and Drug Administration, had vowed in April to undertake "extensive scientific investigation" that would establish the cause of autism spectrum disorder in a limited time.

But experts cautioned that finding a sole reason of autism spectrum disorder - considered by experts to be the result of a complex mix of genetic and environmental factors - would be difficult.

Autism spectrum disorder is a type of permanent neurological difference and condition that impacts how individuals perceive and interact with the world, and is identified using doctors' observations.

In his legal document, the attorney general - a Trump ally who is seeking the Senate - alleges Kenvue and J&J "willfully ignored and sought to suppress the evidence" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

The lawsuit seeks to make the firms "destroy any promotional materials" that asserts acetaminophen is secure for expectant mothers.

This legal action mirrors the complaints of a group of guardians of minors with autism and ADHD who took legal action against the producers of Tylenol in recently.

A federal judge dismissed the legal action, saying studies from the parents' expert witnesses was lacking definitive proof.
