A teenager from New South Wales has been formally accused after allegedly placing numerous prank calls to emergency services – a tactic called “SWATting” – deceptively reporting gun violence incidents were taking place at major retail and schools in the America.
AFP officers laid charges against the boy on 18 December. They claim he belongs to a purported distributed digital network of offenders concealed by anonymous accounts in order to prompt an “urgent and major police response”.
“Frequently young males ranging in age from 11 to 25, are involved in activities like swatting, doxxing and cyber attacks to gain status, infamy and recognition in their internet circles.”
During the investigation, police took possession of a number of electronic devices and a banned gun found in the teen’s custody. This seizure was conducted under a specialized task force formed in the final quarter of 2025.
Graeme Marshall, speaking generally, advised that individuals thinking they can commit crimes using technology and encrypted identities were on notice.
Federal authorities confirmed it began its probe after getting information from American law enforcement.
A senior FBI official, from the global operations unit, stated that the “risky and resource-draining act” of false reports threatened public safety and drained vital public safety assets.
“This incident proves that secrecy on the internet is an false notion,” he said in a shared press release with the AFP.
He continued, “Our commitment is to collaborating with the AFP, our global allies, and tech companies to identify and prosecute individuals that abuse digital tools to inflict damage to communities.”
The accused was charged with 12 counts of communications-related crimes and one count of unlawful ownership of a prohibited firearm. The accused potentially faces up to a decade and a half in a correctional facility.
“Our pledge (is|remains) to stopping the harm and suffering members of these digital criminal groups are imposing on the community, while laboring under the illusion they are anonymous,” the official stated.
The youth was set to be presented before a New South Wales youth court on Tuesday.
