'Not Here': Refugee Centre Rumours Fuel Anxiety and Night Vigils in UK Town

Within the stuffed shelves of a tool shop in an East Sussex community, there is a striking vacancy on the wall where kitchen knives were once shown.

Community rumours suggest this alteration is linked to the prevailing news story gripping the town: the reported imminent arrival of hundreds of asylum seekers at a nearby army cadet site.

The store proprietor comments he was asked to relocate the knives by officers as part of a separate knife crime initiative. "Considering the coincidence, whether that's connected to the camp, I cannot say," he remarks.

A Town Filled by Uncertainty

This incident is typical of the pervasive confusion and apprehension in this town of around 22,000 residents. Townspeople are fighting against schemes to house up to 540 male asylum seekers at the cadet facility.

The site was reportedly chosen as part of a national vow to relocate asylum seekers out of temporary lodgings. Even with government assurances that no definitive choice has been made, many locals are gearing up for what they perceive as an disruptive arrival on their tranquil community.

Patrols and Perceptions

Allegations of taking the law into one's own hands have been directed towards the community after a community-based group began to patrol the streets at night, in high-visibility vests.

Members of this group are keen to separate from the "lawless" description. "The idea is ludicrous," says one organiser, a former scout leader. "We are all men past the age of 40. The whole thing is misguided."

They assert their aim is to address community fears and present themselves as a visible neighbourhood watch before any rumoured arrivals.

"There is a long delay for the police to arrive. So if you're in trouble, you've practically have to request someone to delay harming you momentarily?" one member states.

They stress they would only intervene in the extreme of situations, having received advice on the extent of a civilian detention.

Mixed Opinions in the Community

While many people in the town who spoke publicly disagree with the scheme, there are dissenting voices. One shop proprietor, who himself came to the UK previously, notes on the friendliness he received.

"I believe it's alright for people to seek shelter," he said, noting that migration is a feature across Europe. "All nations takes people."

However, this welcoming stance was hardly in view on a particular Tuesday evening. Tensions were palpable outside the training camp.

Evening of Speculation

A crowd of about 50 protesters had assembled near the camp entrance. Believing that staff were setting up the site, and observing a large police presence, many grew convinced the arrival of asylum seekers was imminent.

"Because it's going to be a middle of the night action, isn't it?" one man said. "They're not going to bring them in during the day."

Police officers present responded briefly to questions. A local builder summed up the scene: "Usually, and I'm being honest, you can hear absolute silence in Crowborough at night."

The standoff intensified when police enacted a temporary dispersal order, granting them the right to remove anyone engaged in antisocial behaviour. For many in the crowd, this was evidence the area was being cleared for the that night transfer of asylum seekers.

Unverified rumours began to circulate. One man insisted he had seen vehicles carrying asylum seekers. Minutes later, a bus labelled "private service" drove past the main road, with unidentifiable faces peering at the windows, feeding the speculation.

A local councillor involved in the scene tried to reassure the angry man, explaining that such buses were regular on that route, often transporting adherents of a organisation from a nearby headquarters.

Anxieties and Frustrations

During the night, confrontations erupted between protesters and police. Anger was vented at the alleged lack of communication from authorities.

"We have no idea who they are! They're not processed!" screamed one man at an officer. "The situation would be totally turned if your own loved ones was attacked, right?"

Allegations of unequal treatment were levelled, with some claiming that certain groups were being treated differently by the police.

A number of residents stated anger at how they were being depicted of their concerns, particularly after a weekend march attended by many people.

"This isn't about being far right," stated one woman. "It's a quiet, normal area. They are just ordinary residents who are opposed to this in our community."

She continued, "The problem is hundreds of men we know zero about being housed here. That is alarming. It wouldn't matter what race, I would carry on protesting."

An Evening That Came to Nothing

In the end, the drama fizzled out. By the middle of the night, it became obvious that no asylum seekers were being brought that night, and most people dispersed.

Politically, a toxic political dispute was underway. Politicians and the MP were exchanging criticisms, with charges of misinformation and political motives being made.

One elected official claimed the MP of being "reckless" and spreading "fake news" that increased fear and anxiety within the community.

Apprehension Persists

Despite of the political wrangling, few in the area were content with the negative attention brought upon the town. One man commented that a friend felt "disappointed" of Crowborough because of the scenes, though they would be reluctant to say so openly.

The day after, new messages emerged among activists of a continued police presence at the camp, indicating that arrivals were possible from that day on.

And so, with little concrete information, the cycle of apprehension was poised to repeat.
