My Top 10 Manga I Discovered Recently (That You've Probably Never Heard Of).

As the manga industry continues its relentless expansion, it becomes a challenge to keep up with every significant new series. Inevitably, the mainstream series get all the attention, however, countless gems of undiscovered treasures waiting to be discovered.

A particular delight for any manga enthusiast is unearthing a largely unknown series buried in publication schedules and recommending it to friends. Here are some of the best lesser-known manga I've enjoyed this past year, along with motivations for they're worthy of attention prior to a potential boom.

A few of these titles are still awaiting a broad readership, especially as they all lack anime adaptations. Some could be less accessible due to where they're available. But recommending any of these will earn you some notable geek cred.

10. An Unassuming Salaryman Revealed as a Hero

Corporate attire meets fantasy adventure

  • Released by: Shueisha
  • Find it on: Manga Plus

I know, it's an unusual starting point, but let me explain. Comics are often fun, and it's part of the charm. I confess that fantasy escapism is my comfort read. While the title diverges from the template, it follows many of the same tropes, including an incredibly strong protagonist and a video-game-inspired fantasy framework. The charm, however, stems from the protagonist. Keita Sato is your typical overworked Japanese corporate man who vents his stress by exploring strange labyrinths that emerged suddenly, armed only with a baseball bat, to defeat foes. He has no interest in treasures, power, or ranking; he only wants to maintain his double life, protect his family, and leave the office on time for a change.

Superior genre examples exist, but this is an accessible title released by a leading publisher, and thus easily available to international audiences through a popular app. Regarding online access, this publisher is still dominant, and if you're looking for a brief, enjoyable diversion, the series is a great choice.

9. The Nito Exorcists

Typically, the word "exorcist" in a manga title turns me away due to the saturated market, but two series changed my mind this year. The Nito Exorcists recalls the finest elements of a popular supernatural battle manga, with its ominous tone, stylized art, and shocking ferocity. I started reading it by chance and got hooked instantly.

Gotsuji is a skilled spirit hunter who kills evil spirits in the hope of finding the one that murdered his mentor. He's accompanied by his mentor's sister, Uruka, who is concerned with his well-being than aiding his quest for revenge. The plot may seem basic, but the portrayal of the cast is thoughtfully executed, and the stylistic juxtaposition between the silly appearance of the spirits and the gory combat is an effective bonus. This is a series with real potential to run for a long time — provided it survives.

8. Gokurakugai

Fantasy cityscape with beast-men

  • Artist: Yuto Sano
  • Publisher: Shueisha
  • Find it on: Manga Plus; Viz

When artistic excellence matters most, then search no more. Yuto Sano's work on Gokurakugai is breathtaking, intricate, and unique. The story doesn't stray far of typical hero's journey beats, with heroes clashing with demons (though they're avoiding that specific term), but the characters are all quirky and the setting is intriguing. The protagonists, Alma and Tao Saotome, manage the Gokurakugai Troubleshooter agency, solving problems in a low-income area where people and animal-human hybrids live together.

The villains, called Maga, are born from human or animal corpses. When human-based, the Maga possesses abilities connected to the manner of death: a hanging victim can strangle others, one who perished by suicide can make people bleed out, and so on. It's a disturbing but creative twist that provides substance to these antagonists. This series has potential for massive popularity, but it's constrained by its infrequent release pace. Starting in 2022, only a limited number of chapters have been released, which can test a reader's patience.

7. The Bugle Call: Song of War

  • Released by: Shueisha
  • Available on: Viz

This bleak fantasy manga approaches the ever-present fight narrative from a novel angle for shonen. Instead of centering on individual duels, it showcases large-scale medieval warfare. The protagonist, Luca, is one of the Branched—those granted singular talents. Luca's ability enables him to convert audio into visuals, which helps him command armies on the battlefield, using his trumpet and upbringing in a ruthless soldier group to become a formidable commander, fighting to eventually earn his freedom.

The world feels a bit standard, and the inclusion of futuristic tech occasionally doesn't fit, but The Bugle Call still provided grim twists and shocking story pivots. It's a sophisticated series with a collection of odd personalities, an compelling ability ruleset, and an interesting combination of warfare and grim fantasy.

6. Taro Miyao Becomes a Cat Parent?!

A calculating main character who idolizes Renaissance thinker Niccolò Machiavelli and advocates for ruthless pragmatism becomes the owner of a cute cat named Nicolo—supposedly since a massage from its small claws is a unique cure for his aches. {If that premise isn't enough|Should that not convince you|If the setup doesn't grab you
