The nation's Semeru volcano, the tallest summit on the island of Java, has exploded, covering several villages with falling ash, leading to evacuations and leading authorities to raise the alert to the maximum level.
The volcano in the province of East Java unleashed blistering plumes of fiery ash and a mixture of stone, molten rock, and gases that moved up to 7km down its sides several times from midday to dusk, while a thick column of hot clouds rose 1.2 miles into the air, according to Indonesia’s Geology Agency.
The eruptions that unfolded throughout the day forced authorities to increase the volcano’s alert level twice, from the third-highest level to the highest, the authority reported. No casualties have been reported.
More than 300 inhabitants in the three villages most endangered in the district of Lumajang region were evacuated to official safe havens, as mentioned by a spokesperson for the national disaster mitigation agency.
He stated that heightened volcanic movements of the volcano on the afternoon of Wednesday prompted officials to expand the danger zone to 5 miles from the summit. People were advised to keep away from an zone along the Kobokan River, which is the path of the lava flow, as scorching gases moved down Semeru’s slopes.
Footage on social media displayed a thick plume of ash sweeping through a wooded ravine to a waterway beneath a bridge. Locals, some with faces covered with volcanic dust and water, escaped to temporary shelters or departed for other safe areas.
Local media indicated that emergency teams were facing challenges to save about 178 individuals trapped on the 12,060-foot mountain at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The group comprised 137 hikers, 15 porters, seven guides and six tourism officials, according to an spokesperson with the protected area.
“They are currently safe at the Ranu Kumbolo station,” a spokesperson said in a video statement. He noted the post was located 2.8 miles from the summit on the northern slope of the mountain, which is not in the path of the hot cloud flow that was seen moving to the south-southeast. Inclement conditions and rain required the team to spend the night there, he added.
Semeru, also called Great Mountain, has erupted many occasions in the past 200 years. However, as is the case with numerous of the 129 active volcanoes in the archipelago, tens of thousands of people continue to live on its fertile slopes.
The mountain's previous significant explosion was in late 2021, when 51 individuals were killed and several hundred more were burned and settlements were buried in layers of mud. The event led to the relocation of more than 10,000 people from their homes.
Indonesia, an archipelago of over 280 million people, is located along the Pacific “ring of fire”, a curved series of tectonic boundaries, and is prone to seismic events and volcanic activity.
