Arne Slot has revealed that the club's hierarchy share his views regarding the recent downturn and he will not abandon their attacking style in quest for a turnaround. The head coach admitted that six defeats in seven games was not good enough ahead of Saturday's match against Aston Villa.
Slot accepted the scrutiny was intense before his altered lineup suffered Carabao Cup elimination against the London club. However, he emphasized that this pressure to arrest the slide is not coming from the team's proprietors or management structure following a substantial investment of approximately £450 million.
"They say similar things," stated Slot, whose side will meet the Spanish giants in the continental tournament and visit Pep Guardiola's side in the English top flight.
Liverpool's manager thinks his team "boast a remarkable roster if they are completely available and fully prepared for the programme we are facing". He said that the recent signings in talents including the attacking midfielder and Alexander Isak, who is likely to miss out again against Aston Villa through fitness issues, had left the club "in an excellent position for the immediate prospects and the long-term future".
When asked why his team were struggling to integrate, he replied: "That question isn't constructive. 'Why, why, why?' I provide reasons and people say I'm making justifications. I can come up with five or six reasons why we are not winning as much or experiencing losses as we do but, as I always emphasize, there are inadequate reasons to have a performance streak as we had now."
Only Burnley (21) have faced more big chances from regular play this season than Liverpool (19). The table-toppers, the North London club, have conceded only two. Yet Liverpool's coach rejects the defense has been too vulnerable and claims there is no justification to compromise forward-thinking approach for a more pragmatic style after ten matches without a clean sheet.
"From my perspective we don't giving up numerous openings so I don't see a reason to alter our approach completely but we must improve in not conceding goals," he declared.
"Against Manchester United, how many openings did we give up? Against Eintracht Frankfurt when we were ahead by two goals, we hardly conceded a shot on target. In all the games we have competed in we haven't given up a numerous openings. Absolutely not. We do concede a bit more than the prior term but that is related to us being behind early so you play more openly. But overall I don't feel that our problem is that we give up too many openings. Our challenge is we are unable to finish the chances we create."
