Israel Authorizes Nineteen New Settlements in Disputed Palestinian Territories

The nation's defense cabinet has given its endorsement to the establishment of 19 fresh outposts in the disputed Palestinian territories, marking a continued campaign for community development.

Hardline Treasury Chief Bezalel Smotrich, who lives in a settlement and advocated for the move together with Defense Chief Israel Katz, stated that the approval was intended for thwarting the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Under international law, Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are viewed as illegal.

The move has elicited criticism from Saudi Arabia. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has commented that Israel's "relentless" growth of communities heightens tensions, curtails Palestinians' use of territory, and jeopardizes the prospects of a sovereign Palestinian state.

Rising Unrest and Political Fallout

Violence in the region has escalated since the hostilities in the Gaza Strip began in the autumn of 2023, intensifying fears that the growth of communities could deepen the Israeli presence and undermine the possibility for a two-state solution.

The two-state solution envisions the creation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with Jerusalem's eastern sector as its seat of government, largely along the boundaries that existed before the 1967 Six-Day Middle East war.

Since taking office in late 2022, the current Israeli government has significantly increased the green-lighting of fresh communities and initiated the formal recognition for previously illegal settler outposts, designating them as "extensions" of existing settlements.

Sustained Growth

The most recent decision brings the cumulative figure of communities approved over the last three years to sixty-nine, as stated by Smotrich.

These authorizations arrive only a few days after the UN stated that construction in settlements had hit its most intense pace since 2017.

The newest batch of authorizations includes the revival of a pair of communities — Ganim and Kadim — which were dismantled almost two decades ago.

Earlier this year, the Israeli government approved twenty-two new communities in the occupied West Bank - what was the most significant expansion in many years.

In a related development, the government also approved blueprints in August to build over three thousand housing units in the so-called E1 project between the capital and the Maale Adumim community, a project that had been stalled for many years amid strong global condemnation.

On that occasion, the Finance Minister said it would "end the idea of a Palestinian state."

Demographic Realities and International Reactions

Roughly 700,000 settlers live in approximately 160 communities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as per data from the Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now. This is land that the Palestinian people aspire to have for a prospective independent state.

This ongoing construction has drawn ire from neighboring countries who have steadfastly said it undermines hopes for a peaceful two-state outcome.

It has furthermore sparked concerns about the potential incorporation of the occupied West Bank.

Former US President Donald Trump had previously warned Israel about this step, stating to a publication that Israel would forfeit its backing from the US if it proceeded.

In a diplomatic shift, the UK - along with other nations such as Australia and Canada - recognised a State of Palestine, a notable although largely symbolic change in foreign policy.

Israel strongly rejected this step, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring that a Palestinian state "will not happen."
