How The Sport's Legendary Players Continue to Shine in Their Fifties

When a 14-year-old Ronnie O'Sullivan spoke regarding Steve Davis in 1990, he remarked "he invents shots … not many players possess that ability".

This early statement highlighted O'Sullivan's distinct philosophy. His drive isn't limited to winning matches encompassing setting new standards in the sport.

Today, after three decades, he exceeded the accomplishments of his heroes while competing in the ongoing tournament, where he holds records for both the most veteran and youngest champion, O'Sullivan will mark his 50th birthday.

In professional sports, having just one player of that age is impressive enough, but O'Sullivan's milestone signifies that three of the top six world players are now in their sixth decade.

Mark Williams and John Higgins, similar to The Rocket became professionals over thirty years ago, also celebrated their 50th birthdays recently.

Yet, this remarkable longevity are not guaranteed in this sport. The seven-time world champion, who shares the record alongside Ronnie for most world championships, won his last ranking event in his mid-thirties, whereas Steve Davis' triumph in 1997, nearing forty, was considered an unexpected result.

This legendary trio, however, stubbornly refuse declining. Here we explore how three veterans remain competitive in world snooker.

The Mind

For Steve Davis, now 68, the primary distinction across eras lies in mentality.

"I typically faulted my technique for failures, rather than adjusting mentally," he explained. "It seemed like the natural cycle.

"These three champions have demonstrated otherwise. It's all mental… careers can extend beyond predictions."

O'Sullivan's mindset was shaped through working with Professor Steve Peters, their partnership starting since 2011. During a recent film, The Edge of Everything, O'Sullivan asks him: "How long can I play, without doubting myself?"

"If you focus on age, you trigger negative expectations," Peters responds. "Thoughts like 'Oh, I'm 46, I can't perform!' Avoid that mindset. If you want to win, and continue performing, then ignore age."

Such advice O'Sullivan has followed, mentioning recently that turning 50 "acceptable," adding: "I avoid to overburden myself … I appreciate this life stage."

Physical Condition

While not an athletic sport, success still relies on physical traits usually benefiting youthful players.

Ronnie stays fit through running, but it's challenging to prevent aging effects, like worsening eyesight, something Mark knows very well.

"It amuses me. I require glasses constantly: reading, medium distance, long distance," Mark stated this season.

The Welsh player has contemplated lens replacement surgery delaying it repeatedly, most recently in November, primarily since he continues winning.

Mark could be gaining from brain adaptation, a mental phenomenon.

A vision specialist, who coaches athletes, explained that provided no eye disease such as cataracts, the mind adapts to weaker eyesight.

"All people, after thirty-five, or early forties, will notice the eye lens stiffening," she explained.

"However our minds adjust to difficulties continuously, even into old age.

"Yet, should eyesight remain fine, bodily factors could decline."

"Eventually in games requiring accuracy, your physique betrays your mind," Davis commented.

"Your arm doesn't perform properly. The first symptom I felt was that while alignment was good, the pace was wrong.

"Delivery weight becomes problematic with no easy fix. That will occur."

O'Sullivan's mental work coincided with meticulous physical care and he frequently emphasizes the role of diet in his achievements.

"He doesn't drink, consumes nutritious food," said a former champion. "He appears he's 50!"

Mark similarly realized dietary advantages recently, revealing this year he incorporates a pre-match meal, which he claims maintains stamina through extended matches.

And while Higgins lost significant weight in 2021, crediting spin classes, he currently says the weight returned though intending setting up equipment to reinvigorate himself.

Driving Force

"The greatest challenge with age is training. That love for the game needs to continue," added another expert.

The veteran trio face similar challenges. Higgins, a four-time world champion, stated in September he finds it hard "to practice regularly".

"However, I think that's normal," Higgins continued. "Getting older, priorities shift."

John considered reducing his schedule but is constrained by the ranking system, where major event qualification depends on performance in smaller competitions.

"It's challenging," he explained. "Negatively affect mental health attempting to attend every tournament."

Similarly, Ronnie has reduced his European schedule after moving abroad. The UK Championship is his initial home tournament this season.

Yet all three seem prepared to retire yet. Similar to tennis where great competitors like Federer, Nadal and Djokovic motivated one another to excel, so too have O'Sullivan, Higgins and Williams.

"If one succeeds, it makes others wonder why can't they?" said a pundit. "I think they motivate each other."

Absence of New Rivals

Following his most recent major victory this year, O'Sullivan remarked that new generation "must step up despite my age with poor vision, a unreliable arm and bad knees yet they can't win."

While China's Zhao Xintong won this year's world title, few competitors risen to control the tour. This is evident current outcomes, where 11 different winners claimed the first 11 events.

Yet challenging when facing O'Sullivan, with exceptional natural talent rarely seen, remembered since his youth on television.

"His technique, you could immediately see," noted, watching the youngster rapidly clearing the table to win prizes like outdated technology.

Ronnie often states that winning tournaments "aren't crucial."

However, he has suggested previously that droughts help maintain drive.

It's been nearly two years since his last ranking title, but Davis believes turning fifty might inspire him.

"Who knows this milestone is the spark Ronnie needs to demonstrate his greatness," commented the veteran. "We all recognize his talent, and he loves astonishing people.

"Should he claim this tournament, or the worlds, it would stun everyone… That would be a historic feat."
