Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to determine whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 elections conclude.
"Yeah, it would be dishonest if I denied it," Newsom remarked when questioned about giving serious thought to a presidential run post the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."
Newsom's time in office as California's leader concludes in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he cautioned that any choice is a long way off.
"Fate will determine that," he added.
The California governor has emerged as a prominent critic of the current federal leadership, employing his social media accounts and advocating for a ballot measure that would boost the party's House seats in response to GOP gerrymandering. This move has invited attacks from critics.
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom is indifferent about the state's residents in a weekend segment on Fox News. Duffy announced a strategy to withhold government money from the state and warned suspending the authority to grant trucking licenses.
"I plan to withdraw $160m from California," Duffy said, after a this week's tragic collision in the state involving an non-citizen trucker that caused loss of life and injured individuals.
His administration highlighted that the national authorities had renewed the worker's status on several occasions, which allowed him to obtain a trucking license under federal law.
Duffy had before indicated he was withholding additional funds from the state for ignoring language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.
"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand federal law," Newsom's office responded in a previous release countering the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."
A recent survey found that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters said that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in 2028. In recent years, public support for the governor has risen to an typical level of 33.5% from previous levels, while his negative ratings has fallen from an typical level of over 40% to 38.4%.
Some time ago, Newsom commented while on a trip several swing states that he had "no idea" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.
"The notion that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, amazing," he stated. "No one can say? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who meets that moment. And that is the issue for the American people."
