Flight Delays in the US Expected to Worsen, Transport Chief Alerts

American flight controllers are more and more looking for second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay during the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official informed a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, causing terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays due to weather and additional factors.

Over three thousand American flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he expects the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," Duffy remarked in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had met with several controllers to listen to their worries directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, can I secure an alternative of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields said travel would be held up due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest after the shutdown started.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on the weekend, rendering it the second most extended halt in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when questioned if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead made a personal plea to controllers.

"I require my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy said.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth most active airport in the country and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel stretching upward to the metropolis of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert went out at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Many flights were operating normally by midday.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were delayed an mean of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the authority said DFW, the second most active airfield in the US, could experience problems from low staffing in the afternoon.

The agency advised travelers in California to consult carriers about revised departure times.

The issue comes ahead of the third match of the World Series, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest periods to travel by air in the US.

Strain on US air travel contributed to ending a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the halt had reached its fifth week and affected flight services, including pilot training.

It led a number of flight controllers to remain absent on the same day on 25 January 2019, briefly halting travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

That same day, Donald Trump, who at the period was in his first term as leader, consented to approve a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
