The directorate of the FBI has declared a historic decision: the agency will cease operations at its current headquarters and transition personnel to already established office spaces.
According to a latest announcement, the older J. Edgar Hoover Building, a landmark in downtown DC, will be closed permanently. The workforce will be housed in already built locations in other parts of the city.
This strategic change will see a group of personnel taking over space within the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, which contained the offices of another federal agency.
“After more than 20 years of failed attempts, we put together a deal to permanently close the FBI’s Hoover headquarters and move the workforce into a safe, modern facility,” officials said.
The initiative is framed as a way to better allocate public resources. Leadership noted that this relocation focuses spending appropriately: on defending the homeland, law enforcement, and protecting national security.
It is also meant to providing the modern FBI with better tools at a fraction of the cost compared to staying in the older structure.
This announcement comes after previous political controversies concerning the bureau's future home. Earlier, officials from a nearby state had initiated legal action over the cancellation of an earlier proposal to move the main offices to their state, arguing that money had already been allocated by lawmakers for that purpose.
The J. Edgar Hoover Building itself is a notable example of concrete-heavy architecture, planned and erected in the mid-20th century. Its design style has long been a point of controversy, as it broke with the architectural style of other government structures in the city.
Its own namesake, J. Edgar Hoover, was reportedly dismissive of the building, once lambasting it as “the greatest monstrosity ever constructed in the city of Washington.”
