Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and stated they should be detained and penalized "through capital punishment" following their release of a disputed video.
The recorded message, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who in the past served in defense or security positions.
"Like us, you all made an oath to protect and defend this founding document," the officials affirmed in the brief video. "And right now, the risks to our governing document aren't just from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our statutes are clear, you can decline illegal orders, you can refuse improper directives, you should reject improper directives. No one has to execute orders that violate the law or our constitution."
The recorded statement appeared to trigger a heated reply from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he stated: "This constitutes really bad, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's comments on that day, House Democratic leader issued a combined declaration denouncing the comments.
"Political violence has no place in America," they declared. "Congress members who participated in the video all worked our country with tremendous patriotism and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful threats of violence against members of Congress, and call on Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in communication with security officials "to guarantee the safety of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these extreme online messages and withdraw his aggressive rhetoric before he leads to violence," the announcement added.
The representatives who were featured in the video also issued a declaration.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who love this nation and made an vow to protect and uphold the founding document of the United States," they said. "Our pledge is permanent, and we aim to maintain it. No intimidation, coercion, or call for violence will stop us from that important duty."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president views it subject to penalty by death for us to reiterate the statutes," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the founding principles and duty to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "All citizens must join forces and condemn the ex-president's calls for our murder and political violence. This is a time for moral clarity."
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's statements and posted on social media: "It's important to understand: the former president is demanding the execution of public representatives."
He stated: "This represents an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this without delay and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "It is very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the legislature instructing troops to defy commands, I think that's unprecedented in American history."
The GOP official also according to sources stated to journalists that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the violation of treason" but that "attorneys have to analyze the terminology and determine all that."
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a media member, "Is the president want to execute members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the representative declared. "We see current representatives of the US Congress who coordinated to organize a video message to members of the US military, to active duty service members advising them to ignore the executive's proper directives."
She added: "The sanctity of our military depends on the command structure, and if that structure is broken, it can cause people getting killed, it can lead to chaos, and precisely what these elected officials ... are fundamentally supporting."
