The US leader stated on late Wednesday that he had signed the bill resoundingly approved by US legislators that mandates the federal justice agency to release more files concerning the deceased financier, the late pedophile.
This decision follows months of opposition from the chief executive and his political allies in Congress that fractured his Maga base and created rifts with certain loyal followers.
Donald Trump had opposed releasing the Epstein documents, calling the matter a "fabrication" and railing against those who attempted to publish the documents public, notwithstanding pledging their publication on the election circuit.
Nevertheless he reversed course in the last week after it became apparent the House of Representatives would approve the measure. Trump said: "There are no secrets".
The specifics remain uncertain what the department will release in following the measure – the measure outlines a range of potential items that need to be disclosed, but includes exemptions for some materials.
The bill requires the chief law enforcement officer to make public Epstein-related records publicly available "in a searchable and downloadable format", covering each examination into Epstein, his associate Maxwell, flight logs and movement logs, individuals cited or listed in relation to his crimes, organizations that were tied to his trafficking or financial networks, protection agreements and additional legal settlements, internal communications about prosecution choices, documentation of his confinement and passing, and information about potential document destruction.
The agency will have thirty days to turn over the files. The bill contains certain exemptions, such as redactions of victims' identifying information or private records, any representations of child sexual abuse, publications that would endanger current examinations or legal cases and representations of demise or mistreatment.
