At least 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Police Raid on Organized Crime

A minimum of 64 civilians lost their lives in a law enforcement action targeting the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's past.

Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. More than 80 people were taken into custody.

Fierce clashes broke out when around 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization countered with shooting, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, officials said.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "horrified" by the security action, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Raid Aftermath

The area of favelas close to Rio's airport is considered to be the main base of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.

Local authorities stated no less than 50 of the fatalities were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Many residents were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Local Reaction

Community members have likened the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

Criminal Expansion

The Red Command group has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.

Security forces stated more than 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the operation, together with multiple guns.

Raid Preparation

The combined action by various security forces follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Numerous alleged criminals are thought to be participants in an organization from the Pará state who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.

Major law enforcement actions are not uncommon in the country ahead of significant global gatherings in the South American nation.

The international environmental meeting the environmental summit is scheduled in the northern city of Belem in November.
