NSW authorities have levied a penalty against an US-based online influencer and handed out two driving violation citations for alleged reckless operation after a swarm of electric bicycle users converged on the famous Sydney landmark during the busy commute on Tuesday.
A group of around 40 people riding electric bikes and motorbikes proceeded along the bridge’s main deck, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The assembly then turned around and rode through the downtown area and a nearby district.
"There was a risk of serious injury or fatalities," remarked a senior police official the officer on the following day.
Police said they did not chase right away the group out of safety concerns but rather found the group at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the Botanic Gardens, at which point they broke up.
Later in the week, police stated they had issued the US social media influencer known as the influencer, 26, with two violation tickets for careless operation (with no death or previous bodily harm), carrying a penalty of $562 and penalty points per notice, connected to the bridge ride-out. They added that the investigation is ongoing.
The influencer reportedly has over 3.4m followers on one platform and over 1.2 million on Instagram.
The content creator spoke with a major newspaper recently after the incident gained traction on digital platforms, stating he regretted giving "the biking community" a bad reputation.
"I accept the blame. That was among the safest ride-outs I’ve ever seen," he told the publication. "I am a visitor here, and I intend to abide by the laws and norms of the city. So when I decided to do a meet and greet it did not involve a group ride, it was just to greet people under the bridge."
"I did not know the area well, it was my fault we found ourselves on the bridge and I had a decision to make: whether the group rides the full length of the bridge and comes back, which is a crime. Or we reverse, essentially, before entering the bridge. I chose at the time to turn around."
The spate of electric bicycles on streets across the country has sparked increasing demands for stricter rules. A senior government official, Mark Butler, commented that illegal ebikes were a "total menace on the road."
"Kids have done stupid things on bikes since the invention of the penny-farthing [but] the injuries that are presenting at our ERs are truly severe," the minister stated. "We must ensure we prevent these things coming into the country [and] police are given the powers to take strong action, to confiscate them, to crush them, to destroy them."
NSW recorded 226 injuries associated with electric bikes in 2024. However, in the first seven months of 2025, that number surged to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four fatalities.
