Perhaps it’s due to the base story, but the film’s response to these intricate issues is somewhat facile; repeatedly, a lead’s mental struggles quickly dissolve after a prolonged talk with a peer or a senior. But what 100 Meters lacks in plot refinement and pacing, it compensates for in breathtaking graphics. Utilizing trace-over animation, in which cartooning is traced over filmed sequences, the feature creates remarkably precise dash moments. The physical exertion of a dash is on full display, and the struggle and triumph of rivalry are imprinted on the athletes’ physiques.
One particularly momentous race ends in the downpour, with sheets of monochrome brushwork that immerse the screen. More than any dialogue, these flourishes of creative mastery encapsulate the quasi-enlightened elation the movie aims to inspire.
100 Meters is in UK cinemas from the 16th of November.
